All lectures take place at Ealing Town Hall in the Queen’s Hall until April 2010 when they will move upstairs to the Liz Cantell Room. The timing of the lectures is from 7.30 pm. to 9.20 pm., with questions from about 9.05 pm. All lectures are free of charge to members, but there is a charge of £3 for visitors. Refreshments are usually available in the interval for a small charge.
Wednesday, 12th May: “An evening with Sir
John Betjeman”
Andrew Davis will present a picture of Sir John Betjeman, a complex man who revelled in life and whose wide-ranging interests never cease to stimulate.
Thursday, 10th June (AGM): “How our
language evolved”
Following the formal AGM Hugh Granger will explain how our lkanguage has roots that include Latin, Norse, Saxon, Jute, Anglian and Gaelic and the amusing quirks and spelling that would infuriate a saint.
Tuesday, 6th July: “The Wallace Collection”
Susan Jenkinson will give an illustrated talk on the history of one of the finest collections of art ever assembled by one family and now a treasured London museum.
Wednesday, 11th August: “Alfred Gilbert”
Jane Kelsall will examine the maker of Eros, the most famous piece of British sculpture. He was never properly paid and spent 26 years in exile in Belgium before returning to finish his royal monument – the tomb of the Duke of Clarence at Windsor.
Thursday, 2nd September: “A photographer’s look at
Richmond Park”
Ron Teague will show us photographs of Richmond Park through the seasons.
Tuesday, 12th October: The Female Status
Mary Forlemnza will have a light-hearted look at the lives of many women who have improved the female status.
